“These two commanders, that is, Dositheus and Sosipater, represent the holy preachers who, by the arrangement of the man Maccabeus, that is, the most heroic warriors, of whom it is written in the psalm: "The Lord strong and mighty in battle" (Ps. 24:8), are appointed to wage war against all the errors of the faithless.…”

19Howbeit Dositheus and Sosipater, who were of Maccabeus’ captains, went forth, and slew those that Timothy had left in the fortress, above ten thousand men.

18But as for Timothy, they found him not in the places: for before he had dispatched anything, he departed from thence, having left a very strong garrison in a certain hold.

20And Maccabeus ranged his army by bands, and set them over the bands, and went against Timothy, who had about him a hundred and twenty thousand men of foot, and two thousand and five hundred horsemen.
21Now when Timothy had knowledge of Judas’ coming, he sent the women and children and the other baggage unto a fortress called Carnaim: for the town was hard to besiege, and uneasy to come unto, by reason of the straitness of all the places.
